Dopamine, you probably heard this before and most by now know what it is. If you not sure let me fill you in, dopamine in its lames terms is the feel good hormone. When you see a cookie or donut it triggers that craving you feel for it.
Since we’re now aware of this fact how can we make it work for us. You may feel helpless in health journey when it comes to saying no to the food that is most effecting your health.
Dopamine tends to hit right before, at this moment you need to be self-aware and mindful of what happens next. If you like most people you will cave in and eat as much as possible, and feel bad after.
Here are a few things you can do instead:
- Drink water- Most of the time a craving for high calorie foods just means you are dehydrated, and a cup of water could do the trick.
- Get physical- Going outside for a walk or doing some body weight exercises will get your mind off that craving.
- Work the mind- When that craving hits you may just be bored. You can take this time to do something productive that will work your brain. A puzzle, read, crossword is all examples you can reach for.
- Give it time- Step away from the urge for a couple minutes. Take a few deep breaths and before you know it the urge passes.
If these tricks don’t work you can always be proactive. Don’t buy the snacks in the first place. When going shopping try not to do so hungry, have a grocery list already completed so you don’t have to even think about what you need.
Dopamine will always be there, replacing something unhealthy with something healthy will help develop a habit of making healthy choices.
It takes time and effort on your part, but with the right attitude you can get it done.
